Samina Baig, Pakistani Mountaineer Reaches Peaks
Samina Baig made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to summit the world’s highest peak at 8,848 metres high. In 2010, she became the first to ascend the virgin peak Chashkin Sar (above 6,000 meters) now called the ‘Samina Peak’. She conquered another virgin peak in 2011 that was named ‘Koh-i-Brobar’ or the ‘Mount Equality’ in 2011.
Mir Zafar Ali Bags Another Oscar
Pakistan’s 38-year old visual effects specialist, Mir Zafar Ali bagged his third Oscar and first for the category of Animation for the Walt Disney Animation Studio, this year for his immaculate effects in the year’s blockbuster frozen. Ali has worked on visual effects and graphics in many Hollywood movies, including The Day After Tomorrow, X-Men, Stealth, Monster House, The Golden Compass, The Incredible Hulk, The Mummy and Aliens in the Attic.
Barazuca, The Pakistani Football
Pakistani manufactured Barazuca tossed between the opponents this year at the football world cup final this year in Brazil. The football named Adidas Barazuca was designed by Adidas and was manufactured at Forward Sports, Sialkot Pakistan. The company has been supplying footballs to the world cup since 1970.
Saad Haroon, The Second Funniest Person In The World
In the final of the first World Famous Laugh Factory’s Funniest Person in the World competition, Pakistani stand-up comedian Saad Haroon secured second position. The contestants faced off in an online voting competition for the prize. Saad was among five artists who had made it to the final of the event. Saad Haroon is a well-known stand-up comedian who created Pakistan’s first improvisational comedy troupe called Blackfish. He is the creator of a popular video sketch called ‘Burka Woman’.
Prof. Atta Ur Rehman, Bags China’s Highest National Award
Internationally renowned scientist, Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman has got the People’s Republic of China’s highest national award Friendship Award of China. The Award is being given for the tremendous and historic contributions of Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman to develop strong linkages between China and Pakistan in various fields of science and higher education.
Raniya Hosain, Won Common Wealth Essay Competition
Fifteen year old Raniya Hosain from Lahore was announced as the senior winner of the Royal Commonwealth Society’s 2014 Commonwealth Essay Competition. Writing on the essay topic: ‘Describe what your country has to offer over members of the Commonwealth team’, Raniya’s entry is the heart-warming tale of an elderly and impoverished Pakistani fruit seller who inspires generosity and laughter in those he meets.
6 Pakistanis Make to the BBC 100 Women List
Conquering the world with their documentaries, campaigns and cartoons, five Pakistani women have made it to BBC’s 100 Women list. Among BBC’s 100 women are documentary film-maker and Oscar award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Internet rights activist Sana Saleem, Ayesha Mustafa Pakistani fashion entrepreneur, filmmaker and campaigner Sara Khan, cartoonist Nigar Nazar and Saadia Zahidi.
Maheen Khan, Designer For Upcoming Hollywood Flick Cinderella
Veteran Pakistani designer hailed for her line of clothes Gulabo will be designing clothes for the upcoming Hollywood flick Cinderella. The intricately embroidered coats donned by the male lead of the movie have been exclusively designed by Maheen khan. This is one of Maheen’s several Hollywood ventures including the dress designs for movie Jinnah earlier.
